What is the Pop Up Monastery?

The Pop Up Monastery is a retreat aimed at women from all over Europe who seek time out from their busy lives and the opportunity to meet women from all generations and different cultural backgrounds and church traditions.

From 8-21 August 2015 fifty women from 16 countries, aged between 19-73 years came together at the Convent of Mariensee in Germany to build a monastic community, including a broad range of activities such as pilgrimage, cooking, handicraft, gardening, empowerment workshops, music, silence and prayer and many more….

Participants from Greece, Sweden and Estonia

The ‘pop up nuns’

The Pop Up Monastery 2015 was a pilot project and might be duplicated in the future. The planning group will now work to produce a brochure ‘How to organise a Pop Up Monastery’ to be published in early 2016 that will hopefully encourage similar follow up projects.

Thank You!

We would like to thank the Abbess Görcke and all the residents and friends of Mariensee for opening their doors and sharing their daily life with us! The Pop Up Monastery was a truly enriching experience for all participants and we made many new friends.

The project has been organised by the young women’s group of the Ecumenical Forum of European Christian Women (www.efecw.net), a church-related network that has been active in 30 countries since 1982. The aim of the EFECW is to strengthen and encourage women and women’s networks, to help women to find a common European identity and challenge to action.

What does ‘Pop Up’ mean?

Have you ever had dinner at a pop up restaurant? Or visited a pop up gallery? ‘Pop up’ is a term used to describe an event or a business that appears only for a certain amount of time and then moves on. Our ‘Pop Up Monastery’ was the first of its kind in Europe.
